Peer Counseling
Meet our peer counselor, Yamayra!
Hello! My name is Yamayra. I am the Peer Counselor for the Meriden WIC office. I am a happy and blessed mom of four kids who have given me great (and sometimes challenging!) experiences with breastfeeding. As a peer, I am here to support mothers and babies in their breastfeeding journey. I am here to provide information and help mothers make educated choices about how they feed their babies. I am excited to serve the community!

What is a Peer Counselor?
Our Peer Counselor is a breastfeeding mom like you. She works alongside the WIC nutritionists to provide you with an additional layer of breastfeeding support. She provides emotional support and advice, follows up on your breastfeeding plan, and can refer you to a lactation consultant as necessary.

The Peer Counselor conducts prenatal phone calls during the first, second, and third trimesters. She also checks in with families on a regular schedule after their baby arrives, helping to cheer them on and provide support to reach their breastfeeding goals.

*Our Peer Counselor is bilingual in English and Spanish.
Who can benefit from Peer Counseling?

Families who are interested in breastfeeding but have little or no support at home.

Families who have had a difficult time breastfeeding in the past.

Families who are currently having difficulties breastfeeding and may benefit from more frequent follow-ups.
